The U. S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs has announced a competition to identify potential host institutions for the inaugural
2010 Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq. This 10-week program will bring cohorts of Iraqi scholars in select fields to U.S. institutions for faculty development, research, and other guided study activities. The program is designed to equip grantees with knowledge and tools to build the capacity of universities in Iraq and to advance the education of future generations of Iraqis. The program will lay the foundation for Iraqi scholars and their U.S. hosts to develop long-term institutional relationships and areas of cooperation that can be sustained after the grant period. The Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) will administer the program on behalf of the Department of State and is pleased to offer this opportunity for U.S. institutions to apply to host the scholars in the summer of 2010.
The application requires a written proposal, which is due to CIES by January 18, 2010. Note that hosting institutions will need to offer particular strengths in the areas of focus—education, management/business administration, science and technology (including engineering), linguistics (focus in ESL) and public health—and will include research universities, liberal arts colleges and comprehensive universities.

Each year, the US State Department and Department of Education partner together to support International Education Week initiatives that take place all over the country. Their web site houses a myriad of ideas for educators from K-12, college/universities, embassies, businesses and the local community. The site also includes a logo that you can cut and paste for your promotional materials. You can find out if you’re a “worldly whiz” by taking one of the three “Global IQ” quizzes on the site – they’re great fun and you will be stumped by at least one question!
At my current campus, Western Connecticut State University, we are coordinating a variety of events for the week. These include a Language Panel where professionals share their journeys learning a foreign language (or multiple) and explain how it has opened doors in their work and personal lives. Our faculty will be presenting on the history and economy of the European Union. The Business School students who participated in a virtual marketing project with students from Loyola College in Chennai, India will be sharing their insights about how working on virtual teams across cultures has deeply enhanced their educational experience.
I encourage each of you to find a creative way to educate another about the joy and value of being internationally aware. There is no greater way that you can share your experiences abroad than educating another and broadening a mind to a different way of looking at the world we ALL live in. Happy International Education Week!

We know that there are many benefits to studying abroad and we encourage students to use their skills from these experiences when interviewing for jobs. The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology published a recent study showing that living abroad actually does enhance creativity. Conducted by researchers at INSEAD and Northwestern University, the study included nationals from several countries. This short interview of William Maddux, one of the lead researchers in the study, provides a concise summary of the findings and methodology.
