Why We Believe What We Believe
Why do we believe what we believe? How do our beliefs and values impact actions, policies, and practices, both locally and globally? Do worldviews change, and under what circumstances? These fundamental questions – which are at the heart of who we humans are, and why we do what we do – have engaged Craig N. Shealy, Ph.D. for over 20 years. Executive Director of the International Beliefs and Values Institute (IBAVI) and Professor of Graduate Psychology at James Madison University, Dr. Shealy has captivated audiences around the world through compelling journeys into the human heart and mind, facilitating deep reflection along the way about the nature of human nature. Author of the Beliefs, Events, and Values Inventory or BEVI, Dr. Shealy also coordinates the Forum of Education Abroad’s BEVI Project, a consortium of colleges, universities, and study abroad providers that are examining the processes and outcomes of international, multicultural, and transformative learning. A licensed clinical psychologist, Dr. Shealy is the recipient of the Early Career Award from the American Psychological Association’s Division of Psychotherapy, a Madison Scholar at James Madison University, and a National Register Legacy of Excellence Psychologist.
