This innovative workshop is designed for students who have recently studied abroad and/or for those who have been pursuing a degree in the US who will soon be returning home. Working with professional artist and educator Todd Drake, participants will inventory their significant international experiences. Todd will teach participants how to create an impactful and reflective image that represents the participants’ time abroad. Then, using a buffet of approaches and materials combining objects, images and reflective writing, they will create a work of art that gets to the heart of their time abroad. Participants will leave with a finished work of art that can be displayed in an on-campus exhibition and/or photographed to be documented and shared on a website.

This workshop addresses re-entry in a new way – one that celebrates, synthesizes and offers ample time for self-reflection and self-expression.

Todd Drake creates works of art that focus on building understanding between people both within the US and internationally. The US State Department has engaged Todd and his current exhibition to help build bridges between Sunni and Shia Muslims in Bahrain and to empower women in Saudi Arabia. He has authored and designed several books in collaboration with undocumented immigrants from Mexico to the United States. An experienced traveler and arts educator, Todd teaches studio art at the college level and was a 2004-2005 Rockefeller Fellow at the Center for Global Initiatives at UNC Chapel Hill. He is an artist in resident there and lives with his wife in the heartland of North Carolina.
