International Education: On the Edge of Possibility

International education and travel can be an incredible experiential learning opportunity outside the classroom. Dan and Audrey weave lessons and stories from their nine years of traveling around the world to help us understand our changing world and better adapt to it. They illustrate the skills developed through immersive travel and living abroad including how to overcome fears, cultivate creative thinking, manage uncertainty, and communicate effectively. They share practical advice on how to make the most of a study abroad or international travel experience – including adjusting to different cultures, overcoming foreign language fears, and assisting personal and professional serendipity.

Study Abroad: Meet the Global Workplace Where It’s Headed

How can students use study abroad to position themselves not only for today’s job market, but more importantly for that of the future? Drawing from their 15+ years of international experience in over 90 countries, Dan and Audrey take an entertaining and refreshing look at how study abroad can prepare students with forward-leaning skills, for a future they help create. They do so by asking us first to imagine our future selves. With this mindset, they offer a look at where both global business and the workplace is headed, including the professional skills that will be in increasing demand in 2020 and beyond. How do these emerging skills overlap with those honed while studying and engaging abroad?  They talk about tools to enable deliberate decisions throughout the study abroad cycle, to shape one’s future self, tips for choosing a program that not only delivers on an “experience of a lifetime,” but also helps build a meaningful experience portfolio, tools to engage beyond the classroom, to discover opportunities which will enhance and showcase their personal and professional development, and frameworks and vocabulary to help students sell any international experience on resumes and in interviews when they return. After this talk, students may never look at study abroad — or any life experience for that matter — quite the same.

Make It Count! How to Make the Most of Your Study/Education Abroad Experience

Study abroad is an excellent way to understand a new country, culture, language and yourself. The question is: what sort of approach – not only to study abroad, but to life in general — can you use to squeeze the greatest value out of your international opportunities? This talk includes practical advice on connecting and engaging with local people, choosing independent experiences, and handling yourself and your fears.  (A workshop version for students and faculty is also an option. Testimonials

“Dan Noll and Audrey Scott came to Providence College to speak with our students about embracing risk and leading full lives. Their presentation was precisely what we hoped for. They inspired students AND FACULTY and prompted campus conversation to move toward further internationalization. Importantly, they listened intently to every detail I provided them about our campus and its population, then they built their presentation from that audience awareness. – Dr. Eric Hartman, Assistant Professor of Global Studies, Providence College

” I invited Daniel and Audrey to visit our Jackson State campus in November 2016. The objective of their visit was to provide a broad view of the advantages of internationalizing our curriculum and investing in a study abroad program, but what they gave us went so far beyond that. Dan and Audrey provided an opportunity for us to reflect on our mission as an institution and asked us to consider what responsibilities we have to our students in the context of a global work force. More importantly, they challenged us to explore the ways in which we, as a college and as a collective of individuals, both succeeded and failed our students in moving them past their comfort zones and into the areas in which real growth happens. They brought to our campus a sophisticated but relaxed professionalism that fostered real, powerful conversations among faculty, staff, students, and administrators. They ignited the imaginations of our students, who spoke excitedly of Dan and Audrey long after they left campus.” –  Jackson State University faculty

“Daniel and Audrey spoke about quality content, storytelling, and social media in easy to understand, practical language. They included examples and tips that I felt like I could take away immediately, incorporate into my work and also suggest to students and other sustainable travel professionals. Their workshop exceeded my expectations! Their speaking and delivery combined energy, humor, quality content and tangible takeaways in a professional yet approachable, conversational style.” – Giannina Veltri, Tourism-Travel and Eco-Adventure Program – Confederation College, Ontario

“Your audience will leave inspired and with a piece of every place Daniel and Audrey have visited in their hearts. And like I did, they’ll do something with it.” – Ryan McRae, Professional Writer and Trainer

“We asked Dan and Audrey to give the closing keynote at our TBEX event in Dublin. They were nothing short of amazing. Our attendees had extremely high expectations for their talk. Dan and Audrey absolutely delivered. They are both extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the world of travel and social media and they have the utmost integrity. Their message was tailored to our audience and they hit the bullseye. We have had some really big names speak at our event and some very popular speakers as well. Dan and Audrey are the only speakers to ever have a standing ovation at TBEX.” – Rick Calvert, CEO & Co-Founder BlogWorld & New Media Expo

“Audrey and Dan’s talk at Providence College taught me to ask not what happens if I do make a decision, but rather what happens if I don’t. They gave me a new perspective in life and encouraged me to dream a little bigger. Their stories about the wonderful people they have met were very rewarding to hear. I look forward to keeping up with their website and following their journey!” -Jacqueline Folan, Providence College student

About Audrey and Dan

Dan and Audrey are the husband-and-wife storytelling team behind the award-winning website “Uncornered Market.” For the last fifteen years they have lived, worked and traveled across the world to over 90 countries and all continents. Whether it is traveling across Central Asia and the entirety of the Silk Road by public transport, working in a new country or climbing to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro, what drives Dan and Audrey is continually pressing the boundaries of what is possible — personally and professionally.  Inspired in part by Audrey’s study abroad (France) and Peace Corps experience (Estonia), their extensive international experience spans both traditional corporate and non-profit organizations, as well as entrepreneurial environments. When they left their jobs in Prague, Czech Republic on what was meant to be a 12-18 month creative sabbatical to travel around the world, they recognized shifts in technology and digital media. They leveraged these trends and turned what was meant to be a sabbatical into new professions. Among their many roles include consultants on social media strategy for the U.N. Foundation-supported Global Sustainable Tourism Council, digital storytellers and photographers for microfinance organizations and social enterprises, and speakers at TEDx, sustainable tourism, and entrepreneurship conferences. Most recently, they facilitated a one-week event at the Leading Change Institute  (Kansas State University) on the topic of ethical service learning and volunteering with 40 leaders in this topic. In all their presentations, they weave together lessons they have learned through over 15 years of exploring the world together — risk taking, creativity, empathy, and connection — and how to pursue and apply these themes in one’s personal and professional lives.
